App Review: MilkRun

It's the app you've seen ads for everywhere ... from on the back of buses, to when you're scrolling through TikTok; MilkRun cannot be avoided. Here's a look at my experience with the app ...

It was actually because of this over-the-top advertising that I decided to download the MilkRun app and give it a go. According to the people I'd seen on the ads, I was "never going to shop for groceries in the same way again", and "groceries to your door in 30 minutes" and honestly I was like "challenge accepted buddy".
WHAT IS MILKRUN?
Knowing absolutely nothing about MilkRun or it's inception, I was surprised (but at the same time not surprised) to see it was powered by Woolworths. I don't know why I was surprised but it makes perfect sense ... they already have the infrasture in place to supply groceries, so why not utilise that to provide a quick and easy-to-use service.
From the ads I had assumed it was another way to order groceries (like the supermarket, but faster) but once I started scrolling through the app I realised YES it was like that, however it was more about 'I need something quick and don't want to pop to the local Dairy and spend loads of money', kind of thing.
It was providing another option instead of having to leave the house and make a quick run to the Dairy. Now this causes me to feel all kinds of weird things about potentially stopping supporting our local Dairy owners who we love, but I understand the need for services like this because of the ever increasing cost of living.

ORDERING MY GROCERIES:
After a few days of having the app on my phone, I realised it was time to place an order when I saw we had run out of milk. Why is it always the milk (insert eyeroll haha)??!!!
I placed an order for the milk I needed, plus I got a couple of extra goodies so I could make a cheesecake, and a little treat for me.
Using the app was very straight forward and I was able to connect my Everyday Woolworth's Rewards card to the account, which meant I still reaped the rewards of the shop.
I placed the order at 10:06am, and was able to track it in a similar way you might do with Uber or Uber Eats. My order arrived less than 40 minutes later and honestly I couldn't have been happier.
I didn't pay for delivery (the first three orders are free, and after that they're $7 for each order for me), and I didn't have to go out anywhere to pick anything up so it was really perfect. Even if I had to pay $7 for delivery, I think I'd do it because I don't have to go out and deal with people or spend money on petrol (or in our case electricity as ours is an electric car) ...

THE COST:
When it comes to the pricing, it is obviously a bit more expensive than the supermarket, but I found it quite a bit cheaper than my local Dairy.
I've done a comparison between what I bought from MilkRun vs my local Woolworths vs UberEats (which was from my local FreshChoice) vs my local Dairy:

As you can see from the above, I couldn't actually get all of the groceries I wanted from my local Dairy, so whilst the total is cheaper, it would have been quite a bit more expensive compared to the other options if I was able to actually get everything I needed.
MilkRun itself is very similar to UberEats, but I found MilkRun to be slightly cheaper overall. At the time I did the comparison of MilkRun to UberEats, UberEats had a special on FreshChoice products, which gave me an additional 20% off.
NOTE: what's available in my area might not be in yours. I have access to several shops close by which means I'm spoiled for choice with UberEats and the grocery delivery. I know not everyone will have this. It may be even more expensive for you to get groceries with UE.
MY FINAL THOUGHTS:
Overall the app was easy to use, and I can see myself using it if I needed something and couldn't leave the house (if someone was sick, or I couldn't get out, etc) ... the price isn't actually too bad although you do have to factor in the delivery fee once you've used up your three free deliveries.
Like UberEats, the MilkRun app offers users more variety in terms of groceries, compared to your local Dairy. However unlike UberEats, MilkRun's delivery fee is much more desirable. At one point I saw an option to order from another supermarket for $14 delivery through the UberEats app. SHEESH!
With regards to the variety of groceries available, as someone who suffers from Coeliac Disease, having access to gluten free products isn't always possible at my local Dairy, so MilkRun will be a welcome option at our house!
I will definitely consider using this service especially when the kids are sick.
HOWEVER, I won't be using MilkRun instead of my regular grocery shop - obviously the prices are more expensive
UPDATE: I wrote this blog back in July, but only posted it now in September. I have since used MilkRun again when my kids were sick and we ran out of milk and bread. It was a Godsend! To not have to worry about packing the kids up in the car and run to the dairy was actually really great.
MORE FEEDBACK ABOUT MILKRUN:
When I talked about MilkRun on my Facebook page, I received a few comments regarding the service and the AI Meta have summed up the responses very nicely for me:

Have you used this app/service? What did you think??
